Lamia Yared
Lamia started taking classical voice lessons while a teenager.
She first became involved in a Yiddish musical, Double Identity,
presented at the Saydie Bronfman Theater. The experience broadened her interest
for klezmer and
traditional/world music. Her primary interest was singing jazz standards and
therefore took private lessons in
jazz improvisation with Ranee Lee. She has performed
in restaurants with the pianist Félix Stussi, and also participated in midnight jam sessions in New York.
Lamia went later to study music theory and jazz improvisation at
Concordia University. During this period, she took part of the fund raising
event for Liban-Canada fonds.
She has recently been touring as a back vocalist for Francesca Gagnon, the
voice of Alegria in Cirque du Soleil. Lamia is fascinated by Byzantine,
Middle Eastern music and Sephardim songs. Exploring improvisation
along those new avenues is to be her next venture as a singer.
